The Painted Tombs

This burial chamber was discovered in 1967 and consists of a single chamber with a double-pitched roof. It was recently dedicated to the memory of the architect who was responsible for the restoration and conservation of all the Etruscan painted tombs in Tarquinia. A banquet scene is depicted on the rear wall of the tomb with two pairs of men, each reclining on separate “klynai” (type of couch) while women are standing both behind and at their sides. The side walls depict festive scenes of dance and music set in an small wood full of birds and festooned young trees.

Dated: First half of the 5th century B.C.
