Between the 12th and 13th centuries, the entrance way to the borgo, climbing up from the Fontana Nova and the Marta River, was through a semicircular archway.

On the left lay a small defense tower and at the apex of the interior portion of the arch rest the “piombatoia”, the lead crest. Above the arch, two filled-in holes can be seen which were once used for the wooden scaffolding during construction. On the right, the archway is set against a portion of wall that dates back to the early Middle Ages.
