The Historic Center of Tarquinia

The Etruscan city of Tarkna (Tarquinii in Latin) was situated about ten kilometres inland from coastal Gravisca, its main port and a powerful emporium of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Etruscan inhabitants developed and prospered in an ideal geographical location which dominated the underlying valley of the Marta River, an effluent of Lake Bolsena. For centuries, this waterway, in addition to being navigable from the sea to the city, guaranteed contact with those living inland and greatly contributed to establishing Tarkna as a flourishing economic centre and a prominent political power.

A few steps from Rome, the heart of the Etruscan Maremma.

The Tarquinia territory, one of the vastest in Italy, stretches from the shadowy woods of Viterbo all the way to the sunny beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast.
Throughout the centuries this land provided food and shelter to numerous peoples. The present-day Tarquinia, with its pulsing vitality and in full expansion, is the living aspect of a constellation of other cities that died silently and whose traces can still be seen. In summer you can sunbathe on the local beaches and swim in the calm waters of the Tyrrhenian sea, but in any season you can enjoy the coast, the countryside, the woods. The city has a lot to offer at any time of the year.

From the slope of the hill, the old medieval town with its houses, churches, towers and austere buildings enclosed in the perfect defense wall overlooks the see. Visiting the city is a journey back in time: every street in the historical centre has something special, the medieval squares, the soaring towers that testify to the prestige of the families who owned them; the Romanesque churches and Torrioni that are a witness to the protection, both physical and spiritual, of the people, and finally the gardens and meeting places where the tourist can enjoy the fresh breeze softened by the warm sunlight and admire the open panorama where the colors of the cultivated hills meet the green of the woods and the azure of the sea and the sky. All this seems an enormous palette of natural colours.

Tarquinia enjoys an ideal location favored by the vicinity of important communication centre: the port of Civitavecchia, with the connections to Sardinia, is only ten minutes away, while it is just 45 minutes to the Fiumicino national and international airport. This favorable position makes Tarquinia a convenient base for future tourism. With some of Italy’s most important artistic centers at hand – Rome 50 minutes, Florence and Pisa 2 and a half hours, Siena an hour and a half, Naples 3 hours, Viterbo 45 minutes, Orvieto 1 hour – Tarquinia is the ideal crossroads for a tourist who loves travelling.
